It is of some note, David, that in the Old Testament, some of the prophets were not priests but everyday shepherds and farmers that God selected to tell the Good News to Jew and Gentile (Remember Jonah?) In a couple of weeks I will be leading a seminar for laity as to how they can get the message out. Some of them can begin a Bible study at their work place, those with children can teach the young about the Christ and the list goes on and on. In fact, I would surmise that after 30 years in the ministry, the vast majority of new members came about because the laity made the first move in inviting them or talking to them about the faith. The only change I would make in your question about whether the lay Christian has any responsibility would be to change the word "responsibility" to "privilege." For it is a privilege to tell others about the eternal life provided for them from God Himself.

I was brought up to believe that we will give account for whether we witness to others or not. That we will be saved by grace but if we do not labour to bring others into the faith we are held accountable.

I have since come to realize it is all of God's effort that brings people in. Does the lay Christian have any responsibility or is it solely the men in public ministry?

Thank you,
